Design Engineer
General Job Description / Key responsibilities
The role of a Design Engineer is to design and develop innovative cost-effective design solutions for varied and demanding market sectors and to identify cost saving opportunities where possible.
Key responsibilities include the creation of technical drawings using solidWorks for manufacture. Ensuring accurate bill of materials, revision control, robust testing, risk assess all projectwork.
This is a supportive role in the design team where the Design Engineer will assist the Development manager or project owner to fulfill design requirement.
Objectives / Key deliverables / KPI
· Time Management - Manage project timings and keeping line manager informed to manage client expectations and deliverables.
· Drawing Output – Creation of technical drawings using Solidworks or Solid Edge to company approved design standards and in line with CDM compliance and regulations.
· CAD File Management – Manage CAD files and design workflow within ITAB’s Vault environment/s. Ensuring revision process is adhered to.
· Cost Effective – Ensure Value engineering is considered in design process and Design solutions are realistic to the manufacture environment the product is intended to be made.
· Collaboration - Teamwork orientated role where support to Development managers, Sales team, Manufacture team and procurement team is expected.
· Quality Control - Ensure prototypes are checked, tested (where required) and supporting documentation is created such as Risk Assessment, Load test and O&M

Cross-Functional Collaboration
· Chair/participate in various meetings; internally, with suppliers and customers.
· Liaise with various departments throughout the company and suppliers to highlight and take advantage of value engineering opportunities.
· Support supplier/vendor assessments for purchased components.
Project & Change Management
· Drive projects through the business from conception through to engineering release and subsequent support for production delivery.
· Participate in costing estimation activities and participate in tender cost analysis to ensure competitive bids are submitted and subsequent products are designed and implemented to submitted cost.
· Manage engineering change and non-conformance.
· Project manage the sourcing of engineering prototypes / customer samples through the supply chain / development facility.
· Manage own workload/reallocation of work as requested by the Technical Manager.
Site Work & Administration
· Attend working sites and trading stores to assess ITAB equipment in the field.
· Undertake site visits and surveys as and when required (both in the UK and abroad).
· Fill in a monthly company timesheet to enable costs to be allocated accordingly.
· Undertake additional duties as requested by the Technical Manager.
Key Competencies & Skills
· Must be proficient in a 3D design software package appropriate to presenting your design solutions.
· Must be able to create and lay out compelling proposal documents and presentations using PowerPoint.
· Must be able to demonstrate experience of taking design projects from brief to delivery.
· Must have experience of designing retail display equipment in metal, wood, glass and plastics.
· Must be a practical person with experience in a manufacturing environment.
· Must have a good understanding of MS Office.
Technical Competencies
· Responsible for implementation of all required design information including Bills of Materials / work instructions relating to new product introduction.
· Check engineering release packs for drawing/model inconsistencies.
· Identify existing designs where value engineering opportunities exist.
· Produce all technical drawings to company design standards.
· Manage CAD files and design workflow within ITAB’s Vault environment.
· Participation and leading in structural load testing.
· Risk Assessments – Support the creation of this document against the template, seeking direction from the Development Manager as required
· O&M's – Support the creation of this document against the template, seeking direction from the Development Manager as required.
· Assembly/Install guides – Support the creation of this document against the template, seeking direction from the Development Manager as required.
· Actively participate in developing the use of 3D CAD system standardisation and capabilities.
· Research new technologies that would benefit the business.

Qualifications & Experience
Work experience:
· Minimum 1 years’ experience in technical design, post-graduation in industry – essential
· Solidworks – essential
· PDM Vault experience – preferred
Industry experience:
· Experience at working at an equipment manufacturer with an on-site factory - preferred
· Shopfitting design experience - preferred
· Cost awareness and control experience in a production environment
Formal education:
· A degree in product design or engineering with a course emphasis on the technical rather than the creative elements of technical design
Language:
· English / Other languages an advantage.
Business travels:
· Infrequent travel may be required
